Machining Capabilities

Thompson & Smith Industries provides precision machining services using a combination of CNC and manual equipment. Our current capabilities support prototype, low-volume, and select production work where accuracy, control, and domestic manufacturing are critical.

CNC & Manual Machining

Thompson & Smith Industries provides precision machining using a combination of CNC and manual equipment. This hybrid capability supports prototype development, secondary operations, and low-volume production where accuracy, flexibility, and hands-on control are critical.

Capabilities include:

  • CNC milling for precision machined components
  • Complex profiles and tight-tolerance features
  • Prototype and low-volume production
  • Manual milling for fixturing, secondary operations, and custom work
  • Manual turning of shafts, bushings, and round components
  • Secondary turning operations, part modifications, and specialty machining

Wire EDM

Wire EDM capabilities allow for precise cutting of complex internal features and profiles that are difficult or impossible to produce with conventional machining methods.

  • Precision cutting of hardened and difficult-to-machine materials
  • Tight internal corners and intricate geometries
  • Excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy

Future Capability Expansion

Thompson & Smith Industries is actively planning equipment expansion to support additional CNC machining capabilities, including CNC turning, as customer demand and program requirements grow.

Materials Machined

We regularly machine a wide range of materials, including:

  • Aluminum alloys
  • Carbon and alloy steels
  • Stainless steels
  • Tool steels
  • Brass and copper alloys
  • Engineering plastics

Additional materials available upon request.

Tolerances & Quality Focus

Our machining processes are built around accuracy, repeatability, and inspection discipline.

  • Tight-tolerance machining to customer specifications
  • In-process and final inspection
  • Dimensional verification using calibrated measuring equipment
  • Quality-focused work instructions and documentation

Part Marking & Engraving

We provide permanent multi-material part marking for identification, traceability, and compliance requirements.

  • Serial numbers and part identification
  • Logos and controlled markings
  • Marking depths compliant with applicable federal laws and regulations
  • Suitable for metal and select polymer components

Prototype to Production Support

Whether developing a new design or supporting an existing program, we work closely with customers to ensure manufacturability and consistency.

  • Prototype development and iteration
  • Low-volume and production runs
  • Engineering support and feedback
  • Repeatable production planning

In-House Product Manufacturing

In addition to contract machining services, Thompson & Smith Industries designs and manufactures select proprietary products in-house. This work leverages the same equipment, processes, and quality standards used for customer projects.

Our experience producing our own products reinforces manufacturability discipline, process control, and real-world production efficiency—benefits that translate directly to customer programs.

  • Design-for-manufacturing driven production
  • Repeatable internal production processes
  • Quality and traceability consistent with contract work
  • Products manufactured and controlled entirely in-house

Product offerings are available upon request.

Domestic & Secure Manufacturing

All work is performed in the United States. Our operations emphasize supply-chain security, controlled access, and regulatory awareness appropriate for defense-adjacent and firearms-industry manufacturing.
